Therapeutic Fundamentals for the Back, Hips, and Shoulders and Neck (9-Week Series)

November 1, 8 and 15 – Therapeutic Yoga for Hip Care

November 29, December 6 and 13 – Therapeutic Yoga for Shoulder and Neck Care 

A Therapeutic Series for Back, Hip, and Shoulder and Neck Care designed to support longevity in movement, to help ease discomfort and pain, and to create a space to explore an accessible yoga practice that is unique to you and your body. 

This series will involve body awareness and interospective techniques, mindful movement and accessible and adaptable yoga postures and sequences, restorative and yin yoga, and myofascial release (self-massage).  Support for the nervous system and techniques of mindfulness, including guided meditation and breathing techniques, will also be included.

Each anatomically focussed three week section will follow a similar format:  Week 1 – Anatomy and Awareness; Week 2 – Stability and Strength; and Week 3 – Release and Ease.

What you will learn:

  • Anatomy of the spine, hips, and shoulders and how we all are unique
  • Common postural and movement habits that may affect everyday movement
  • Yoga postures and sequences to create stability, improve mobility, posture, and overall ease of movement
  • Yoga tools and techniques to help with discomfort and pain both on and off the mat
  • How to choose the right poses, variations, and supporting practices (breathing, meditation, and myofascial release) for you

Before each weekly session, participants are provided with educational resources to learn more about what will be discussed and practiced that week and after each weekly session, participants will be provided with short recorded practices to explore movement in between sessions. In addition, before the series begins, each participant will receive a personalized intake to address specific goals and challenges.

Offered by Maria Hillier, 500 RYT, a current Yoga Therapy Student with Ajna Yoga (Victoria, BC), this series is part of her educational program and she will be mentored over the course of the series by a Yoga Therapist/Instructor.

Classes will be held in the studio (limited to 10 distanced students) and Online Via Zoom. In Studio students can bring their mat and any props you have, we also have everything you need at the studio. We’ll provide a list of items from the home to use if you do not have yoga props. If you miss a class you can request the recording, you’ll have 24 hours of access.

Props needed are: bolster, 2 blankets, 2 blocks, 2 massage or tennis balls in a pouch or sock, chair, strap/belt and eye covering (pillow or cloth).
